East Lake Golf Club is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Tom Cousins, whose transformative vision and unwavering leadership forever changed the trajectory of our Club, our community, and the role of golf in driving meaningful social impact.
Tom was more than a philanthropist; he was the catalyst behind East Lake's extraordinary transformation. With the steadfast support of his wife, Ann, and through the efforts of the CF Foundation, led by his daughter Lillian Giornelli, Tom championed the restoration of East Lake Golf Club as part of a collective mission to revitalize the surrounding neighborhood and break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. In doing so, he helped create lasting pathways to prosperity and opportunity for generations of East Lake families.
From the very beginning, Tom believed this work could only succeed through deep collaboration and resident-centered community partnership. He worked closely with Eva Davis, the longtime leader of East Lake Meadows, whose voice and leadership were essential in shaping a vision rooted in equity, dignity, and shared opportunity.
Tom's efforts led to the creation of the East Lake Foundation and, later, the development of Purpose Built Communities, a national organization that empowers local leaders to revitalize neighborhoods using East Lake's comprehensive, holistic model, which continues to inspire transformation in communities across the country.
"Golf with a Purpose" was more than a motto to Tom Cousins; it was his mission. Today, that mission remains the cornerstone of East Lake Golf Club. We are proud to carry it forward, using the full reach of our Club, our platform, and our partnerships to create opportunity, support families, and strengthen communities.
Tom Cousins leaves behind a legacy of transformation that will endure for generations. The members, staff, and entire East Lake family extend our deepest condolences to Ann, Lillian and Greg Giornelli, Grady Cousins and Rachel Garceau, the entire Cousins family, and to the many partners who brought this remarkable vision to life.
His purpose lives on in everything we do.
